Artist Statement

“To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering.”  --Aldo Leopold

In a world experiencing an ever-increasing subjection to heavy “tinkering,” essential pieces are getting lost.  This century has seen an acceleration of the extinction rate of species causing thousands of unique organisms to disappear.  If these trends continue, millions of plants and animals may be lost forever in just a few decades; some estimates predict one-third to two-thirds of all current species could be extinct by 2050.

Like Aldo Leopold I believe in the importance of preserving the “integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community.” There are inherent ecological, aesthetic, and cultural benefits to biodiversity and I feel a personal responsibility for the fate of the biosphere.

I attempt to create images that convey my sense of awe and wonder at the splendor of the natural world and hope to inspire others to appreciate and protect its fragile treasures. May each new season refresh our wonder in all life’s beauty.

My aspirations can be summarized by a quote from Margaret Mead…

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world; indeed it is the only thing that can.”
